What was examined

Media Tenor analysed 13,869 reports about protagonists across ten international TV news programmes during the Rio Olympic Games, covering 8–22 August 2016.

What the study reported

Women accounted for 38% of the athletes represented in the news, compared with 45% of participants at Rio. The publication contrasts that visibility with 33% in its London 2012 comparison and discusses differences among broadcasters.

Visibility and evaluation are different

The report distinguishes the amount of coverage from its tone. It reports a positive overall tone towards the Games, with more positive evaluation of female athletes than male athletes, even while women remained less visible in aggregate.

A dated research finding

These figures describe this specific historical sample. They are not a claim about current sports coverage or all Olympic reporting.
